Collagen for joints: which type to choose (I, II, III)

Collagen for joints: which type to choose (I, II, III)

🎯 Quick verdict

For joints - UC-II (undenatured collagen type II), 40 mg/day on an empty stomach. Works through immunomodulation, and not as a building material. In RCTs, it was superior to glucosamine + chondroitin. For skin and bones - hydrolyzed I/III, 10-15 g/day. DO NOT mix UC-II with hydrolyzed collagen at the same time.

Types of collagen: why one product does not solve all problems

More than 28 types of collagen have been found in the human body. But only three are important for supplements - and they work infundamentally differentways. Choosing the wrong type means you are paying money for zero results.

The main rule: joints and skin need DIFFERENT products. The same collagen cannot work effectively for both purposes.

Three types of collagen: what you need to know

Type I collagen - 90% of all collagen in the body

This is the basis of skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, teeth. When they say “collagen for beauty,” they mean type I. It forms dense parallel fibers that provide tensile strength (like steel cables in concrete).

  • Sources of additives:Bovine leather, fish skin/scales
  • Form for administration: Hydrolyzed (peptides)
  • Dose: 10-15 g/day

Type II collagen - cartilage tissue

Constitutes 50-80% of cartilage matrix protein. Forms a fine network of fibers that hold proteoglycans (sponge molecules that attract water and provide shock absorption).

Critical note:Type II collagen for joints works only in undenatured form (UC-II). Hydrolyzed (split) type II collagen loses its three-dimensional structure and, along with it, the main mechanism of action.

Type III collagen - vessels and organs

Forms reticular fibers - a thin mesh that supports the structure of blood vessels, intestines, uterus and other organs. Usually goes along with type I in bovine collagen.

UC-II for joints: a revolutionary approach

UC-II (Undenatured Collagen Type II) is not a building material for cartilage. It is an immune modulator. And that is why a tiny dose is enough for him - 40 mg instead of 10-15 grams.

How it works: oral immune tolerance

In osteoarthritis, the immune system mistakenly attacks type II collagen in the joints - it perceives it as an “enemy”. This causes inflammation and further destruction of the cartilage.

UC-II enters the intestine in an intact three-dimensional structure. Immune cells of the intestine (Peyer's patches) “read” it and receive a signal: “Type II collagen is yours, do not attack”. This suppresses the autoimmune reaction in the joints.

This is why UC-II must be taken on an empty stomach - so that it enters the intestines intact, without being broken down by digestive enzymes.

What research shows

  • Lugo et al. (2016):UC-II 40 mg/day was superior to the combination of glucosamine 1500 mg + chondroitin 1200 mg in reducing pain (WOMAC), stiffness and improving joint function
  • Crowley et al. (2009):UC-II reduced osteoarthritis pain by 40%in 90 days
  • Athletes (2013):UC-II improved knee mobility and reduced pain after exercise in healthy people without arthrosis

Hydrolyzed collagen for skin and bones

For skin, bones, hair and nails, you need another product - hydrolyzed type I collagen peptides (or I+III). They work as building materials and signaling molecules for fibroblasts.

  • Dose: 10-15 g/day (250-375 times more than UC-II!)
  • Mechanism:Peptides are absorbed in the intestine and stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen
  • Effect on skin:After 8-12 weeks (meta-analysis of 26 RCTs)
  • With vitamin C - essential for collagen synthesis

Why NOT mix UC-II with hydrolyzed

These are fundamentally different products with different mechanisms:

  • UC-II: Works through the immune system → an intact structure is needed → on an empty stomach → 40 mg
  • Hydrolyzed:Works as a building material → split → with or without food → 10-15 g

If you take them at the same time, the hydrolyzed peptides may“silence” the UC-IIimmune signal. Space out your intake: UC-II on an empty stomach before bed, hydrolyzed in the morning.

Strategy by task

Joints only (arthrosis, crunching, pain)

  • UC-II40 mg on an empty stomach at bedtime
  • + Omega-3 2000 mg (anti-inflammatory)
  • + Meriva Curcumin 1000 mg (pain relief)

Skin only (wrinkles, dryness, firmness)

  • Marine collagen type I10 g on an empty stomach in the morning
  • + Vitamin C 500 mg
  • + Hyaluronic acid 120 mg

Joints + skin (integrated approach)

  • Morning (on an empty stomach): Marine collagen 10 g + Vitamin C 500 mg + HA 120 mg
  • Before bed (on an empty stomach):UC-II 40 mg (separately!)

Security

  • Both types are very safe
  • Fish allergy:Choose bovine collagen
  • Chicken Allergy: UC-II Chicken Cartilage - Consider Alternatives
  • Pregnancy: Hydrolyzed - safe. UC-II - not enough data

Resume from Novird

Collagen is not one product, but a family with fundamentally different mechanisms. Selecting the wrong type = null result.

  • Joints:UC-II 40 mg on an empty stomach (immunomodulation)
  • Skin: Hydrolyzed type I 10-15 g + vitamin C (building material)
  • Never mixin one go
Main mistake: Buying “hydrolyzed type II collagen” for joints. Hydrolysis destroys the three-dimensional structure necessary for immunomodulation. For joints - only UC-II (undenatured).
