Prebiotics vs Probiotics: what is the difference and what is more important

🎯 Quick verdict

Need BOTH. Probiotics are live bacteria (seeds). Prebiotics are fiber that feeds these bacteria (fertilizer). Without prebiotics, probiotics do not take root. A synbiotic (probiotic + prebiotic) is the best option. For SIBO: be careful with prebiotics - they may worsen symptoms.

A simple analogy

Imagine a garden. Probiotics are the seeds of beneficial plants that you plant. Prebiotics are fertilizers that help them grow. Without fertilizer, seeds will not germinate. Without seeds there is nothing to fertilize. Both are needed.

Probiotics: live bacteria from outside

Probiotics are microorganisms that you take orally. They temporarily colonize the intestines and have beneficial effects: strengthen the barrier, suppress pathogens, modulate immunity, produce vitamins.

Important nuance: most probiotics do not take root forever. After stopping use, their number decreases over 1-4 weeks. That is why you need either constant intake or feeding with prebiotics in order to create conditions for the growth of your own beneficial bacteria.

Best probiotic strains

  • L. rhamnosus GG—general health, immunity
  • L. plantarum 299v—IBS, bloating
  • S. boulardii—with antibiotics
  • B. longum—mood, anxiety

Prebiotics: food for your bacteria

Prebiotics are indigestible fibers that pass through the stomach and small intestine intact. In the colon, they become food for beneficial bacteria, which ferment them and produce short-chain fatty acids (butyrate, propionate, acetate).

Butyrate is the main fuel for intestinal cells. It strengthens the barrier, reduces inflammation, and even affects the brain through the gut-brain axis.

Types of prebiotics

  • Inulin - from chicory, onion, garlic. 5-10 g/day. Most studied
  • FOS (fructooligosaccharides) - from bananas, asparagus, artichokes
  • GOS (galactooligosaccharides)—from dairy products
  • Resistant starch - from chilled potatoes/rice, green bananas, oats
  • Psyllium (plantain) - soluble fiber, mild prebiotic

Strategy by situation

I want to improve digestion in general

  • Synbiotic (Seed DS-01) or probiotic (Culturelle) + inulin 5 g/day
  • More vegetables, fruits, whole grains (natural prebiotics)

IBS / bloating / gas

  • Probiotic first: L. plantarum 299v (Jarrow) - 2-4 weeks
  • Prebiotic - only 2 weeks after the probiotic, start with 2-3 g of inulin
  • Do not start both at the same time - the bloating may worsen

After antibiotics

  • S. boulardii—from the first day of antibiotics (at the same time, it is not killed)
  • After the course: multi-strain probiotic 4-8 weeks + inulin 5 g/day

CAUTION: SIBO

In bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO), prebiotics may worsen symptoms - they feed bacteria in the small intestine where they shouldn't be. First, diagnosis (hydrogen breath test), treatment of SIBO, and only then - restoration of the microbiome.

Resume from Novird

  • Probiotic: Populates the intestines with beneficial bacteria (temporarily)
  • Prebiotic:Feeds your own good bacteria (long term)
  • Together (synbiotic):Best result
  • For SIBO: First treatment, then prebiotics
Golden Rule: The best prebiotic is a varied diet. Eating 30+ plant-based foods per week creates maximum microbiome diversity. Supplements help, but do not replace the vegetables on your plate.
